Fun in the sun at the 2018 YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run
On Sunday 2 September 2018 thousands of families and friends came together in Melbourne’s CBD to celebrate fathers and father figures at the annual YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run.
Now in its third year, the YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run is quickly becoming Melbourne’s newest Father’s Day tradition. Familiar faces as well as plenty of new ones gathered bright and early to run or walk around the scenic Tan track.
The sunny spring day started 8.30am for the 10km, followed by the 5km at 9.30am. Energy levels were high as participants enjoyed a range of on-course entertainment, including African drummers, cheerleaders and motivational volunteers.
Channel Nine News presenter and YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run ambassador, Peter Hitchener, was spotted in the crowd of runners preparing for the for the 5km.
“It’s wonderful to be here and to be able to acknowledge all fathers – past and present,” said Peter Hitchener.
Melbourne’s Lord Mayor, Sally Capp, also took part in the 5km alongside her dad.
Other YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run ambassadors Jessica Hay, Walter Rapoport, Dr Luke Martin, Margarite Alamo de Parkin and Natalie Moore enjoyed the day celebrating with their families.
Victorian Father of the Year, Sandeep ‘Sunny’ Jadhav, took on the 5km with his wife, Kiran, and two teenage daughters, Kushi and Sachi.
“It’s a beautiful sunny day and although I had to try very hard to keep up with my daughter during the run, the event is a great day out that has lots of activities for all ages,” said Sandeep Jadhav.
Brent and his two sons, Ewan and Harry, were among the many familiar faces at the 2018 YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run, starting their family tradition back in 2016.
“This will be our third year attending the YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run and we keep the tradition going by doing the run together, followed by a hearty breakfast,” said Brent.
“The level of energy from all of the staff and volunteers is what makes this event special – they really keep you motivated!”
Phillip celebrated the day with his dad, Dennis, and son, Will.
“We’ve got three generations running today, making it a special Father’s Day. All of the YMCA staff, the volunteers, pacers, sponsors and participants made today a memorable Father’s Day,” said Phillip.
After completing the run participants enjoyed the rest of the morning recharging, relaxing and playing in the one-of-a-kind Event Village, which offered everything from performances by the Balwyn Gymnastics Club to inflatable sumo wrestling.
Troy started his day by running the course with his two sons and later joined his wife in the Event Village to relax in the sun whilst watching his kids play Bubble Soccer and pet the animals at Farmer Darryl’s Animal Farm.
“The atmosphere here [in the Event Village] is awesome and we will definitely be back next year,” said Troy.
The YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run celebrates dads and father figures, and is an experience that the whole family can enjoy. All of the funds raised from the event will go towards YMCA Victoria school and camping based programs that build resilience and equip disadvantaged young people with strong social and emotional skills.
A big thank you to all YMCA staff, volunteers, event staff and sponsors for making the YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run a huge success.
